What’s the difference between watching an HDTV show/movie on television (720p) and a Blue-Ray movie (720p)?
Let’s say I watch an HDTV-shot show (The Office for example) or an original HDTV-shot movie on television. What’s the difference between this and a Blu-Ray movie on a Blu-Ray player? I have a 720p TV.
Actually 720 content on HD TV whether it be cable, SAT or in disc form is very rare. Are you really talking about the display being 720p?
Ok, for the sake of just sticking to your question, watching something on the air at 720p or 1080i or p versus blu ray at the same definition, things aren’t always the same.
Most people will see a number like 1080p and assume that it’s the same thing no matter what. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Cable and SAT providers must compress HDTV because they have a limited amount of bandwidth. So for example, show on NBC that might be a 1080 lines might only be running at say 10 megabits per second. A blu ray of the very same content could be moving along at say over 40 megabits per second.
Bottom line, until more HD satellites are launched, and cable can get around their bandwidth issues, a disc format like blu ray can show a picture that is free of compression artifacts (at least that a human can detect) and can also carry multi-channel hi def soundtracks that cannot be carried on HD cable or SAT.
So whether you watch on a 720p TV or 1080p TV, blu ray has the potential of showing a better pic and sound.
on a 720p TV, especially a smaller one, actually being able to detect that with your eye could prove to be more difficult.
